How to Commission a Painting

Commissioned Portraits

If you're interested in commissioning a portrait, please read the following details.  Check out the "View My Galleries" photo album titled Commissioned Portraits for several examples of commissions I have done.

Process

I only work from photographs and prefer to take the photos myself.  If you live near or are willing to drive to Louisville, we can conduct the photo shoot at my studio.  It's a simple and painless process; I'll shoot 20 - 40 digital photos of you and then let you scan the images in the viewfinder to make sure we're on the right track.  If you're happy with what you see, then we're finished with the shoot.  (Usually, the entire process takes no more than 20 minutes, but I will work with you as long as it takes to make sure that you're happy with the shots.)  Within a couple of days, I will download the images to determine 4 - 5 shots that I would be comfortable working from.  I will email these jpegs to you and you may decide which of the 4 - 5 images you prefer, or you can leave it up to me to select.

If you live out-of-state and cannot travel to Louisville, you may send me photographs or jpegs of the images you want me to consider.  I'm not always able to work from a typical snapshot as I need the image to be large and close-up.  But I can send you sample jpegs of what I need visually to be able to paint from a photo.  If you can provide a sharply detailed close-up photo, we're in business.

Available Sizes and Composition

The 16" x 16" "head shot" has become my niche and is easily the most requested format.  It's not literally 'only the head', but this format really focuses on the subject's face, with the neck and a bit of the shoulder coming into the composition as well.  I've completed many pieces at this scale and it is an affordable price as well as an unassuming size.  The largest scale I work in is roughly 36" x 48".  I can't work smaller than 16" x 16".

Mostly, I paint faces; I've been doing this for years and that's where my interest lies, as the examples below indicate.  However, I can also do a full-bust, full-length, or multi-figure painting.  A painting with four or more figures would require a much larger panel size and the price would be negotiable.  Please note that overall size isn't the only pricing criteria; additional figures in one painting increase the price regardless of overall dimensions.

Cost

16" x 16"        $750               one subject only / head shot only

18" x 24"        $1,200            one subject only / head shot or full bust (vertical)

24" x 32"        $2,000            one subject / head shot or full bust (vertical)

$2,500            two subjects / full bust (horizontal)

30" x 42"        $3,200            one subject / full bust or waist-up (vertical)

$3,800            two subjects / full bust or waist-up (horizontal)

36" x 48"        $4,000            one subject / full bust, waist-up or full-length (vertical)

$4,800            two subjects / full bust or waist-up (horizontal)

$5,600            three subjects / full bust

These aren't the only sizes I work in, just the most popular.  If you are interested in a square format or a size somewhere in between the above, contact me for a quote.  Or - if you just have some wild idea that you want to run by me, go ahead.  Maybe it'll work.

I require half of the total cost upon commission or at the time of the photo shoot and the remaining half upon delivery.

What You Get

The painting is finished upon delivery!  At that point, I have given you, absolutely, the very best effort I am capable of.  I do not honor requests for do-overs or touch-ups, color changes, wrinkle removal, make my hair wavier, make my collar red instead of blue, change my serious look to a smile, etc.  But what I provide you is a guaranteed spot-on likeness, very accurate, much in the style of other examples on this website.  The painting will look just like the subject.  You'll like it!

All works are oil on museum panel, mounted on a 1" x 2.5" pine support.

Delivery

I will deliver the works to your home in you live locally.  If you live outside of Louisville, the shipping costs will be added on to the final balance due.  I will not charge you 'handling' fees - my packing materials and crating the work up is not on you - only the actual UPS shipping.  I will also pay for insurance on all shipments.

At the time of your inquiry, I will let you know the current turnaround time.  Most typically, expect between 3 - 4 months.  If it's a large painting or multi-piece commission, the turnaround time may be longer.  If you have a short deadline (i.e. birthday gift, wedding present), check with me - I may be able to do something for you.
